The Benefits of Somatic Dance

Soma or somatic practices came into our awareness in the 1970's when Thomas Louis Hanna, a philosophy professor and movement theorist, coined the term somatics in 1976. Soma means "for the body" and through this body of work we learn that the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of ourselves are interconnected. 

In our somatic dance practice, each time you dance will

be different and you may have a physical, emotional or spiritual experience as such:

 

Physical Connection - your somatic dance practice may leave you feeling good in your body, with less stress and tension with more flexibility and ease in your movement. 

 

Spiritual Connection - through a somatic dance practice you can arrive at an ecstatic state and connect to your divinity, where you may feel more connected to god/goddess, angelic realms, and your higher self. You may receive divine insights or have a spiritual experience in your dance.

 

Cathartic Experience - your somatic dance practice can help your body release any stored emotion - as it works itself out through movement. You may experience a somatic release - which is just the body doing what it needs to do as it releases the store emotion from the body through tears, laughter, coughing, yawning, gas and belching. 

 

In a somatic dance practice your body takes over and the mind takes a little vacation. Your mind takes a back seat as the innate wisdom of the body takes over and you (as the dancer) begin to experience the Physical, Spiritual and Emotional aspects align in into balance, harmony and bliss.

 

Somatic dance is a judgement free zone - no judgement of self and how your body is moving and no judgement of others. We take this non-judgement approach and bring into our daily life as a way to release shame, guilt and all the ways we have made ourself wrong.
